UNDP receives offers on project design for Central American Markets for Biodiversity

In Central America micro, small and medium size enterprises (SMMEs) are both vital for local economic growth but also contribute significantly to the loss of the region’s biodiversity. There is now an emergence of global markets for green products from sector such as tourism, agriculture, agroforestry (coffee and cacao), timber, shrimp farming and fisheries.

Together with the advent of systems for certifying production practices, there is an important opportunity to improve SMME production practices to both increase economic development through new market opportunities and at the same time promote the conservation of biological resources. There is also an opportunity for the banking sector to develop new investment opportunities in support of these businesses.

To assist countries respond to these market opportunities the Global Environment Facility (GEF), United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and Central American Bank for Economic Integration (CABEI) designed and implemented a project called CAMBIO.

Panamá.- Centroamérica tiene un alto potencial para desarrollar “negocios verdes” en materia de biodiversidad, adaptación al cambio climático y energías renovables, señaló hoy una funcionaria del Banco Centroamericano de Integración Económica (BCIE).

“El potencial es enorme”, dijola jefa de programas y fondos externos del BCIE, la mexicana Adriana Flores, en el marco de un simposio de dos días para compartir experiencias sobre mejores prácticas de financiamiento para iniciativas ecológicas.

Representantes de organizaciones relacionadas con prácticas sostenibles para la conservación de la biodiversidad debatirán estos temas durante el encuentro en la capital panameña, auspiciado por el BCIE y el Programa de Naciones Unidas para el Desarrollo (PNUD).

On Tuesday July 31st 2012 the Ministry of Science, Technology, Energy and Mining (MSTEM) in partnership with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) announced Jamaica's participation in the initiative Sustainable Energy for All (SE4ALL) in Kingston, Jamaica.
